Joining a regional health practice is more than just a job—it’s a chance to build stronger patient relationships, enjoy a diverse clinical experience, and be part of a welcoming, close-knit community.

GP Trainee Program

Our practice is a dual accredited GP training site with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM). We offer hands-on learning opportunities in a supportive,
multi-disciplinary environment.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Mentorship from Dr. Richard Draper, RACGP’s 2023 GP of the Year

  • A well-rounded experience that includes procedural work, mental health, chronic disease management, and more

  • Up to $15k per term that can be used to cover things like relocation costs, rental costs, travel home to visit family and friends, childcare and further education

  • The chance to develop skills in a setting where you can build long-term patient relationships

  • Accommodation in a fully furnished, three-bedroom house with yard maintenance and cleaning service included – heavily subsidised with no lease and no bond!

  • Flexible work hours and the choice of full or part time

  • 6- or 12-month contract - you choose!

  • Lots of support to help you (and your family) connect with our community.

  • mix of pediatric to geriatrics with good exposure to chronic disease care

I've never lived somewhere and felt that I am a part of the fabric of a place - but I have really felt that in Forbes. It is a huge shift from feeling like a small cog in a giant machine in a metro hospital.

The patient demographic I saw was a mix of pediatric to geriatrics with good exposure to chronic disease care, with support from experienced practice nurses. The practice staff, nurses and allied health staff are all excellent, collegiate and committed to the practice and the community.

    Dr Grace McKenzie, GP Registrar

  • world class education on what it means to be an excellent doctor.

I came to Forbes Medicine & Mind as part of a GP rotation in my third year of the University of Sydney Medical Program. I will be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a world class education on what it means to be an excellent doctor. Compassion, dedication, curiosity and commitment to finding the best tailored treatment to people who come to the clinic with humble expectations.

Dr Nathan Blake, Stage 1 Psychiatry Registrar, Bloomfield Psychiatric Hospital

  • immense hands-on clinical exposure compared to my peers in larger centres

I was so warmly welcomed by the team at Forbes Medicine and Mind and truly felt part of the family from day one.  Living and working in a smaller rural town has given me immense hands-on clinical exposure compared to my peers in larger centres, and has been an incredibly welcoming, comfortable environment as a student.

Jess Skelly, Charles Sturt University medical student

  • My experience working alongside Richard and witnessing his positive influence on the people of Forbes has been pivotal in leading me towards additional training in rural health. I still have a close relationship with Richard and Courtney, and really treasure my time spent in Forbes.

    Johanna Long, former medical student
